Art:K12 is an exhibition program at Weaver Street Market’s Carrboro store, focusing on artwork created by local children and youth. The program began in February 2015. Its initial intention is to offer a public space for viewing visual art created by students in the CHCCS district, as well as local private schools.
The new artwork is by students at Emerson Waldorf High School. It will be on display through August 7.
This exhibition is a collection of Main Lesson Books from the Science and Math program at Emerson Waldorf High School (EWHS), where rigorous academics are infused with music and art. At EWHS each school day begins with Main Lesson, a ninety-minute period devoted to intensive work in an academic subject. The Main Lesson curriculum is studied in blocks, in a multi-disciplinary way. Class meetings are conducted seminar-style, including intensive discussion and hands-on investigation. As the block progresses, each student creates a Main Lesson Book, which includes essays, drawings, poetry, lab reports – a unique interpretation by the student of the material which has been presented and discussed in class over the block period of three to four weeks. The Main Lesson Book, hand bound by the student, is graded by the teacher and returned to the student as a permanent, beautiful record of his or her individual learning. The pages shown in this exhibition have been temporarily removed from the books for the purpose of our display.
