It’s been quite a week with the arrival of Hurricane Florence in the Carolinas. Now, we begin to recover. We support those that need it most, which reminds me of all the small farms and businesses that suffer when we have weather like this.
Our NC cheesemakers are small businesses, many of them both cheesemakers and farmers. During a major storm, they have the added duties of caring for animals and infrastructure. Cows and goats must be sheltered and milked. Damaged fences cannot wait to be fixed. And while handling all this, safety standards must be maintained. Cheesemakers who purchase milk from neighboring farms may experience a disruption in their supply due to transportation issues.
Along with selling wholesale to stores like Weaver Street Market, most local cheesemakers sell at several farmers markets on the weekends. Each market is important income for these small food producers, with a missed market adding to the effect of the storm.
So I’d like to encourage you to pick up some locally made cheese this week. We can support small businesses and help them make up their losses. The best part? We have some amazing, award winning cheeses made right here in our state. Look for cheeses from these makers in all three of our stores:
- Ashe County
- Boxcarr Handmade Cheese
- Calico
- Chapel Hill Creamery
- Paradox Farm
- Prodigal Farm
- Celebrity Dairy
- Goat Lady Dairy
- Holly Grove
