Next week at our Carrboro and Southern Village stores, we launch our sixth annual food campaign for PORCH’s Food for Families program, which currently serves 450 Chapel Hill and Carrboro families identified as food insecure. Your Round Up donations directly support 190 of these families with fresh vegetables and fruit.
PORCH became our first community partner when we launched our Community Food Partnerships in 2015. PORCH is a grassroots hunger-relief organization that collects food and cash donations through monthly neighborhood food drives, then distributes the food to hundreds of at-risk families in our community.
Our partnership with PORCH focuses on their Food for Families program. Each month, over a week’s worth of fresh food (fruit, vegetables, chicken, eggs, and milk) and one bag of non-perishables are delivered directly into the hands of hundreds of Chapel Hill and Carrboro families identified as food insecure.
Weaver Street Market Round Up funds source fresh vegetables and fruit at cost. Each $30 rounded up provides a 40-pound box of fresh food.
In our five-year partnership, Weaver Street shoppers and owners have donated $269,000 for fresh healthy food, which has helped PORCH increase the number of families receiving boxes of food from 270 to 450.
In 2018, Round Up donations helped PORCH Hillsborough launch a Food for Families program, which has grown from 25 to 70 families in Northern Orange County. Our Hillsborough store will Round Up for PORCH Hillsborough after the OCIM campaign reaches its goal.
