Our customers are all about local food! Fresh veggies from local farms are snapped up in the produce department. We herald the arrival of new local vendors. We don’t even sell eggs that are produced somewhere else because we can meet all of our shoppers’ needs right here at home.
But did you ever think about how your purchases impact other “local” communities? I often wonder if a particular product that’s from some other part of the globe impacts the economy there. Is it extractive: simply taking resources out of the community? Or is it regenerative: actually building community wealth and wellbeing? When I want to know that my purchase is making a positive difference in a growing community, I look for fair trade products!
Our Co-op Goals
A huge part of Weaver Street Market’s commitment to our community is in the area of transparency. We believe in shared economics: we want you to see the value and the values in the products we sell. We also want the producer to receive a fair price and to be a long-term partner in our efforts to provide fresh, healthful, and affordable food. We believe in shared community: the actions involved in doing business should build community here, and our buying should build community there!
Our cooperative’s long term goals include emphasizing local and sustainable foods. When a commodity isn’t available locally, we count on working through fair trade partners to assure our customers that the products that we’re bringing to your table are sourced in the most responsible way.
Our Fair Trade Products
So, all of our chocolate is fairly traded. Our coffee is all from cooperatives or direct trade partners, to make sure that the small family farmers that produce the crop are compensated fairly for their hard work. In recent years we’ve worked hard to bring many other fairly traded commodities to you: bananas from Ecuador and Peru, wine and olive oil from Argentina, avocados from Mexico, flowers from Ecuador, and the list goes on…
We work to expand our reach in these areas in order to provide community wealth and development both here and abroad. By working as directly as possible with other co-ops, we’re able to keep costs down for our shoppers. And, we’re excited to offer you a great deal on fairly traded coffee this week: all of our packaged coffee selections are “Buy One Get One Free” all week long for our owners using their emailed owner coupon! You can feel great buying these coffees, knowing that you are helping farmers and their families, in their local communities worldwide. Do your part to support local communities everywhere, and do your wallet some good, too!
